Chapter 2 - Introduction to Software Applications

Assignment - Analyzing Twitter Social Application

Objective:

Your task in this assignment is to analyze the functionalities and objects within the Twitter Social Application. This involves examining how Twitter operates, focusing on core features such as tweets, retweets, direct messaging, user interactions, hashtags, and trending topics. You will also identify and describe the fundamental objects that make up the application, such as users, tweets, followers, hashtags, and trends.

To help guide you, we have provided an example analysis of Reddit, another popular social platform.

Example: Reddit Application Analysis

Functionalities of Reddit

  1. Subreddits (Communities):

    • Users can create and join specific subreddits focused on various topics (e.g., news, technology, gaming).
    • Moderators control subreddit rules, and users can post, comment, or upvote/downvote content within a subreddit.
    • Subreddits can be private, public, or restricted.
  2. Posts:

    • Users can create posts containing text, links, images, or videos.
    • Posts can be categorized with specific tags or flairs to provide context within a subreddit.
    • Users can upvote or downvote posts to influence their visibility.
  3. Comments:

    • Commenting on posts allows for discussions within threads.
    • Comments can also be upvoted or downvoted.
    • Users can reply to each other, leading to nested comment threads.
  4. Upvoting and Downvoting:

    • A core feature that determines the popularity and ranking of posts and comments.
    • High-upvoted posts are more likely to appear on the subreddit’s front page or the Reddit homepage.
    • Downvoted content can be hidden or flagged as irrelevant.
  5. Karma System:

    • Users earn karma points when their posts or comments are upvoted.
    • Karma reflects a user's reputation and contributions to the community.
  6. Moderation Tools:

    • Subreddit moderators have the ability to set rules, remove posts, ban users, or approve content.
    • Automated bots can be used for subreddit management (e.g., filtering certain words or behavior).
  7. Reddit Gold (Awards):

    • Users can reward posts or comments with Reddit awards such as Gold, Silver, or Platinum.
    • Awards provide perks like comment highlighting or unique badges.
  8. Trending Topics:

    • Reddit displays trending subreddits and topics based on user activity and upvotes.
    • This feature helps users discover popular or timely content across the platform.
  9. Direct Messaging:

    • Users can send private messages to other Reddit users for one-on-one conversations.
    • Conversations remain private and are not visible to the public.
  10. NSFW (Not Safe for Work) Content:

    • Certain subreddits or posts can be tagged as NSFW, restricting content visibility based on user preferences.
  11. Reddit API and Integrations:

    • Developers can build applications or integrations using Reddit’s API.
    • Popular integrations include bots, third-party apps, or browser extensions that enhance Reddit's functionality.
